Is a Loved One Affected by Holiday Stress?
Holiday stress affects everyone. However, it can take a toll on older people and you should know the signs that come along with it. Stepping in early can be important to make sure your loved ones have a happy holiday season.
Holiday Stress Signs
Be on The Lookout
Holidays are the time where everyone gets together. It’s also a great opportunity to check up on your ageing loved ones. Usually, we tend to spend more time with them around this season, so you can get a better grasp of whats going on. Something to look out for are:
- Weight Loss
- Hygiene Decline
- Anti-Social or Withdrawn Behaviours
- Forgetting to take medication
- Unpaid bills
- Unkempt home or car
If you notice these signs its time to start a conversation to try and find out what’s going on. Many people on a fixed income or pension can be more stressed during the holiday season due to things such as gifts, new clothing needs, preparing dinners etc. By having a conversation you can try and bring up these things to attempt to find a cause.
If your loved one has mobility issues, this might add stress during this time because of the need to get out and see family. You should make an effort to alleviate these concerns by reassuring them that you, a family member, or friend will help them out.
As we age, our diets change as well. It’s important to take this consideration into account when preparing holiday meals. Our loved ones may feel awkward to bring up special dietary needs, as they don’t want to inconvenience you. It’s important to be clear with them that it’s not a problem to create special dishes they can enjoy.
At Riverside Senior Living we are all about the holidays. We get our residents in the holiday mood every year and try to make every holiday a special one.
